The Drawing Lesson

“The Drawing Lesson” follows drawing students as they train in representation at Tirana’s high school for the arts. Young students are presented with two drawing subjects: the modernist “geometric solids” and the ornamental “classical flower plaster.” These subjects represent the hybridity of contemporary Albanian society, which is trapped in dichotomies like Classicism/Modernism, Communism/Capitalism, Eastern/Western. The process was filmed over a single day, but the editing reverses this linearity: it begins at completion and traces the lesson backward, suggesting a process of undoing, of unlearning.
